In this blog, we are going to discuss the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of liver cysts.

What causes liver cysts?

Liver cysts are generally congenital i.e. they occur before the birth or in the mother’s womb. However, they can also occur post-birth but the reasons behind the same are not discovered by the scientists yet.

The other causes are listed below:

1. Infection with an echinococcus tapeworm

It usually occurs when the individual is exposed to faeces of farm animals like dogs, wolves, and coyotes as parasites are present in these animals.

2. Polycystic liver disease (PLD)

It is a rare genetic condition that can cause liver cysts. In this, multiple cysts develop throughout life without producing any symptoms. Many individuals suffering from polycystic liver disease also have polycystic kidney disease.

3. Other causes can be liver injury or liver cancer

When to see a doctor?

This is to be noted that people suffering from liver cysts do not experience any symptoms, but according to a recent study only around 5–10% of liver cysts cause symptoms. Also, these symptoms first occur in people who are aged around 60 or more.

6 alarming symptoms of liver cysts that you must be aware of:

  1. Heartburn
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Shoulder pain
  4. A distended or protruding stomach
  5. Feelings of abdominal fullness or bloating
  6. Abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right quadrant

An individual tends to experience the above symptoms when a cyst starts bleeding.

Due to the absence of symptoms, liver cysts can be diagnosed through imaging tests. If in case symptoms occur then MRI, ultrasound, or a CT scan is recommended by the doctor. Other things may include blood tests or doctor may scan your medical history etc.

Mostly, liver cysts do not require treatment but when symptoms develop they can be managed by two ways.

  • Temporary treatment

It involves drainage of the cysts. A doctor may insert a fine needle through the abdomen. However, there are chances that the fluid can return over time.

  • Permanent treatment

It involves the surgical removal of the cysts. Performed with a laparoscopic approach, it is highly efficacious. The surgeons usually make 2- 3 incisions into the abdomen to perform the surgery.

However, when suffering from Echinococcus infection, best doctors may prescribe antibiotics.

Due to the use of highly advanced technology and the latest approaches liver cyst treatment in India has become quite convenient for both the doctors and the patients. Also, the use of less invasive procedures has led to reduced tissue damage and blood loss, resulting in a faster recovery.
