Types of oral cancers
There are two major types of oral cancers:
- Lip cancer
- Tongue cancer
Oral cancer usually develops from abnormal cells that grow out of control and form lesions or tumours on the lips. It generally originates within thin, flat cells known as squamous cells that line the lips, mouth, tongue, cheeks, throat, hard and soft palates.
Smoking, drinking and lip cancer
One of the major causes of lip cancer is the uncontrolled consumption of tobacco and alcohol. The poisonous ingredients included in them infect different parts of mouth and throat, thus develops into mouth or throat cancer. Other factors include excessive exposure to the sun and tanning.
When to see a doctor?
Dentists are the first one to notice these types of cancers. However, oral cancers do not have any symptoms, thus hard to get diagnosed. So, if you have a sore or lump on your lips, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have lip cancer.
4 alarming signs of lip cancer that you must not ignore:
- Bleeding lips
- Swelled jaw
- A sore, lesion, blister, ulcer, or lump on the mouth that doesn’t go away
- A red or white patch on the lip
Diagnosis of a lip cancer
A critical examination of the past is generally done before diagnosing a patient with cancer like overall health history, history of alcohol and smoking, through medical and dental treatment and family history of the disease.
So, if the doctor has a doubt of cancer then a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. If a biopsy confirms the same then the progress of cancer is often reviewed by CT, MRI, PET scans, endoscopy etc.
How to treat then?
Some of the treatment are surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy available for lip cancer. Other possible options include targeted therapy and investigative treatments, such as immunotherapy and gene therapy.
Causing lesions or tumours on the surface of the tongue, tongue cancer starts in the cells of the tongue. It generally occurs on the front of the tongue, which is called oral tongue cancer. However, sometimes it occurs at the base of the tongue, near where it attaches to the bottom of your mouth thus, called oropharyngeal cancer.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of oral cancer generally occurs on the surface of the skin, in the lining of the mouth, nose, larynx, thyroid, and throat and in the lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts.
7 alarming symptoms that should not at all be overlooked:
- Experiencing pain while swallowing
- Mouth numbness
- A sore throat that persists
- A red or white patch persisting on your tongue
- Persisting of a tongue ulcer
- Bleeding tongue with no apparent cause
- A lump on your tongue that persists
Who’s at risk?
Like lip cancer the causes of tongue cancer is unknown. However, there are certain conditions that can indicate having the same.
- Consumptions of smoking or chewing tobacco
- Heavy drinking
- Being infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) which is a sexually transmitted disease
- Family history or hereditary
- Poor oral hygiene
How is it treated then?
In cancers, the stage decides the type of treatment i.e. whether the patient needs to be operated or medicated. So, the oral cancer that hasn’t metastasized can be treated by a small operation to remove the affected area. On the other hand, larger tumours usually need to be removed with a surgery called a partial glossectomy, in which a part of the tongue is removed.
So, if you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, which are persistent as well, you should immediately go to an oral cancer treatment clinic in Delhi as the region offers some good options.
